Cherry blossoms…tulips… trees starting to look greener, these are all telling us that SPRING IS HERE! Unfortunately, for a lot of us, we knew that spring is here when we start to get itchy and watery eyes, runny and congested nose, and a constant need to clear our throat! Yes, Spring= Hay fever.
Hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis happens when the immune system become sensitize and over-reacts to substances in the environment like pollen, weeds and dust mites which are generally harmless. Most people blame the pollen or whatever the allergen is for the hay fever; however, as we have said above, it is actually caused by a malfunctioning immune system.
Most spring allergies sufferer are familiar with over-the-counter allergy medications. They can help manage the symptoms of spring allergies but they do not address the cause. Besides, they often come with side effects such as drowsiness and dryness.
When we are treating hay fever in our clinic, we take a thorough health history and perform necessary physical examination and tests for the patient to find out what is disrupting the immune system. Here are some potential causes for a sub-optimal immune system:
Accumulation of toxins in the body
Dysbiosis aka microbial imbalance or a lack of beneficial bacteria in the body
Whether we are addressing toxic load or chronic inflammation, there are many alternative treatment options available without the side effects of over-the-counter medications.
Some examples include:
Herbal and nutritional supplements such as Vitamin C, Quercetin, Zinc, Curcumin etc.
Because we are treating the cause, these treatments will not only help manage your allergy symptoms but will also help reduce the frequency and severity of spring allergies.
